As you can tell from the title, there are five Heian kata. These are the first "set" of kata that the average Shotokan student learns. Heian means "peaceful mind", which is one of the things the student should be striving to develop while practicing these forms. The primary goal of these five kata, however, are to teach the students the basic techniques of Shotokan, as well as how to move.
